Braces payment plans in Bakersfield: how Cherry works

A plain-English guide to using Cherry for braces, from previewing monthly plan options to understanding APR, insurance benefits, and what is due.

Cherry gives eligible patients a way to divide the cost of braces into scheduled payments instead of paying the entire balance at once. Applying shows the plan lengths, monthly amounts, amount due at checkout, and annual percentage rate (APR) available to you before you select a plan.

Applying uses a soft credit check and does not affect your credit score. The exact options are personal, however: approval, term length, and promotional APR offers depend on eligibility. Here is how the process fits into an orthodontic treatment plan at our Bakersfield office.

Start with the treatment plan, not the payment plan

The first number you need is the actual cost of your orthodontic care. That cannot be determined from a photograph or a standard online quote. Treatment cost depends on the bite, the appliance, the complexity of the tooth movement, and the expected treatment time.

At a consultation, Dr. Mendivil evaluates the bite and explains which options are appropriate. Depending on the diagnosis, those choices may include traditional braces, aesthetic braces, or Invisalign. The team also reviews insurance benefits when applicable.

Once the total and any estimated insurance benefit are clear, you know the amount that needs to be covered. That is the right time to preview Cherry's monthly options. Our guide to braces costs in Bakersfield explains the clinical factors behind the total.

How a Cherry payment plan works

The process has five practical steps:

  1. Complete an orthodontic consultation. You receive a diagnosis, recommended treatment, expected timeline, and case-specific cost.
  2. Review insurance benefits. If your plan includes an orthodontic benefit, the office explains how the estimated benefit affects your remaining amount.
  3. Apply through Cherry. The application asks for basic personal information and uses a soft credit check. Cherry says applying does not affect your credit score.
  4. Compare the offers shown to you. Review the length, amount due at checkout, monthly payment, APR, and total of payments for each available option.
  5. Choose whether to proceed. If you select a plan, the approved amount is used for care at the practice where you applied, and you make the scheduled payments directly through Cherry.

Cherry describes the same basic flow on its patient payment plans page: apply, receive care, and pay over time.

Does applying affect your credit score?

According to Cherry, applying does not affect your credit score. Cherry uses a soft credit check to determine which options it can show you.

That does not mean the plan is separate from your credit history after you accept it. Cherry states that it reports payment activity, including late or missed payments, to credit bureaus. Read the agreement before accepting and set up a payment method you can monitor consistently.

This distinction is important:

  • Previewing options: does not affect your credit score.
  • Managing an accepted plan: payment activity may affect your credit history.

Does every applicant receive 0% APR?

No. Cherry offers qualifying 0% APR options, but those offers are subject to eligibility. Different applicants may see different plan lengths, monthly amounts, and APRs.

Before selecting an option, check all five numbers shown in the agreement:

  • Amount due at checkout
  • Monthly payment
  • Number of payments
  • APR
  • Total of all payments

A lower monthly amount may come with a longer term or a different total. The best comparison is not the monthly number alone; it is the full set of terms.

Can Cherry be used with dental insurance?

Yes, a payment plan and dental insurance can play different roles in the same case. Insurance may contribute an orthodontic benefit under the rules of your policy. A Cherry plan can then be considered for the amount that remains your responsibility.

Dr. Mendivil Orthodontics works with these confirmed carriers:

  • Blue Shield of California
  • Delta Dental
  • Anthem Blue Cross
  • Premier Access
  • MetLife
  • Guardian
  • Liberty Dental Plan
  • Medi-Cal & Covered California

Coverage varies by policy, even within the same carrier. Bring your insurance card to the consultation so the office can verify the details that apply to you. Cherry approval is separate from insurance eligibility.

What if you do not have orthodontic insurance?

You can still ask to preview Cherry options. Approval is not based on having a dental policy. The same sequence applies: receive the orthodontic diagnosis and exact treatment cost first, then review any monthly plans Cherry makes available to you.

Not having an orthodontic benefit should not change the clinical question of which appliance fits your bite. It changes how the patient portion is calculated, not which treatment Dr. Mendivil recommends.

Can you pay a Cherry plan off early?

Yes. Cherry says patients may pay a plan off early without a fee or penalty. Payments, statements, and agreement documents are available through the Cherry account portal.

If you are comparing a shorter plan with a longer one, ask yourself whether the scheduled amount still leaves room for normal household expenses. A plan should make the cost predictable, not make the rest of the month fragile.

Questions to ask before selecting a plan

Bring these questions to the consultation and keep them beside you while reviewing the agreement:

  1. What is the full treatment cost for this specific case?
  2. What services and retainers are included in that amount?
  3. What insurance benefit has been estimated, and when is it expected to be paid?
  4. What amount is due at checkout?
  5. How many scheduled payments are required?
  6. What APR applies to this option?
  7. What is the total of all payments?
  8. What happens if a payment is late?
  9. Can the plan be paid off early without a penalty?

The answers should be visible before you agree to anything. If a term is not clear, pause and ask the office or Cherry for an explanation.

See your actual options at a Bakersfield consultation

Online estimates are useful for orientation, but they cannot combine your bite, treatment choice, insurance policy, and Cherry eligibility into one reliable monthly number.

At Dr. Guy Mendivil Orthodontics, the consultation is free. The office is at 11901 Bolthouse Dr Suite 200 in Bakersfield, with private treatment rooms and bilingual staff in English and Spanish. Dr. Mendivil has practiced orthodontics in Bakersfield since 1989.

Schedule a consultation to receive the treatment plan and exact cost first. Then the team can help you review the Cherry options available to you before treatment begins.

Common questions

How quickly can I see Cherry payment options?

Cherry says its application takes seconds and provides a prompt decision. The most useful time to apply is after your consultation, when you know the amount your orthodontic plan requires.

Is Cherry a credit card?

No. Cherry provides installment payment plans rather than a revolving medical credit card. The exact term and APR are shown in the agreement for the option you select.

Can I use an approved amount at another office?

Cherry states that approved funds are used at the participating practice where the patient applied. An approval from one office does not function like a general-purpose credit card.

Who handles the monthly payments?

Payments are managed through your Cherry account. Cherry provides online statements and sends payment reminders by text or email when contact information is on file.
